Baltic Film Production OÜ based in Tallinn (Estonia) was founded in 1998 by producer and director Marianna Kaat. Main activity is production of creative and TV documentaries commissioned by different Estonian and European TV channels. From 2004 company broadened the distribution and started to search for the new possibilities in international co-production.


General Producer




Marianna Kaat was born and lives in Estonia’s medieval capital, Tallinn. She graduated from the St.Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy in Russia in 1986 with a PhD.
Until 1991, she worked as assistant to the director and later as script editor/developer for several documentaries and feature films produced by studio Eesti Telefilm.
During the same time period, she made her first two documentaries as a writer and director: NOT ONLY OFF-SHORE (Grand Prize, International Female Directors FF, Florence, Italy) and IN YOUR OWN WORDS (Ecumenical Jury Award, International DFF Message for Man, St. Petersburg, Russia).

Both films were in the official selections of film festivals in Bornholm, Florence, Madrid, Marseille, St.Petersburg, PRIX Europa-Berlin and others. Both films received several national and international awards.

From 1995 to 1999, she was acquisitions manager for Estonian National Television (ETV).

In 1998, Marianna founded her own production company, Baltic Film Production. Since then she produces and directs documentary films, series and features on her own. Her credits include producing and directing approximately 200 episodes of different television series, AUH SHOW, POST FACTUM:OUR CHOICE, ANIMAL CLINIC and CLAIM ADJUSTORS for Estonian TV channels. Her documentary films are broadcast all over the world and have a quite successful festival life.
Her most recent releases are THE LAST PHANTOMS, where she was producer and director, and KALINOVSKI SQUARE (Alpe Adria Cinema prize for Best Documentary, 19th Trieste Film Festival 2008), which was directed by Yury Khashchavatski. Both have been successful at festivals and widely broadcast. KALINOVSKI SQUARE was screened at over 30 international film festivals all around the world.

As a producer, Marianna has just released two fiction films, BOUND BY BLOOD (short, 22 min., director K. Davidjants) and AN AWESOME TALE (comedy fairy tale, 88 min., director Roman Shirman) in co-production with Interfilm Production Studio (Ukraine) and Exitfilm (Estonia).

Current projects in development, which are produced and directed by Marianna, are THE PIT, a feature length documentary about teenagers working in illegal mining pits in eastern Ukraine and PRODIGY BETWEEN THE NOTES, the exploration of the intimate relations between the English-Russian prodigy Alex Prior and his pushy parents.

As a producer she is currently in development on the documentary LOBOTOMY, a personal research project by director Yury Khashchavatski, who is analyzing the 20-year history of the relationship between Georgia and Russia, which ended up leading to war.
